Each of the 2021 1 oz Gold Australian Rectangular Dragons offered in this Silver.com listing comes with individual protective capsules. The coins are available to purchase in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with a commemorative mintage figure. Featuring all eights, the mintage reflects the importance of the number 8 in Chinese culture. The number is associated with wealth and is said to invite great wealth to those it is presented to.
The Chinese Dragon is quite different than its counterpart from European mythology. Dragons across European cultural lore are depicted as evil figures with wings and the ability to breathe fire. However, in Chinese cultural mythology the dragon is seen as a benevolent beast. Emperors associated themselves with the dragon as a source of the power granted to the leader.
The obverse side of 2021 1 oz Gold Australian Rectangular Dragons features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth-generation bust of the Queen to feature on Australian coins. Adopted in 2019, it was modified from the Jody Clark design released on British coins in 2016. The right-profile portrait comes with an image of the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head, earrings, and a necklace.
On the reverse field of 2021 Gold Australian Rectangular Dragons is a new design of the Chinese dragon. The long, slender body of the dragon shown here is shaped like a figure eight, reflective of the popularity of the lucky number in Chinese mythology. The menacing dragon has four visible hands with sharp claws and a fearsome look on its face. This side includes a “P” mint mark from the Perth Mint.
