When Queen Victoria passed in 1901, it was not long before her son and successor, King Edward VII, suggested a memorial be designed and constructed in the Queen’s honor. Her legacy in England was a large one. She was, at the time, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, and her grace and elegance encapsulated an entire era of British life that came to be known as the Victorian Era.
Earlier in her reign, the six virtues of Victory, Truth, Justice, Charity, Courage, and Constancy had been established as so-called Queen’s Virtues, moral and physical attributes it was believed the Queen carried on as the representative head and sovereign of the realm. These six female personifications were eventually brought to life in the Victoria Memorial erected in London, a towering statue with Victory at its center.
The obverse of the 2021 1 oz Gold St. Helena Queen’s Virtues Victory Coins features the third-generation British coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created by Raphael Maklouf and used on coins of the realm from 1985 to 1997. Elizabeth II carries the Queen’s Virtues forward into the 21st century and has supplanted her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, as the longest-reigning monarch in English history.
On the reverse field of 2021 Gold Queen’s Virtues Victory Coins is a left-profile statue of Victory. Based on the personification of Victory found in the Victoria Memorial, the figure of Victory has towering wings on her back, lifts her right hand overhead, and carries the palm branch as a sign of triumph and peace.
