The Galapagos Tortoise is arguably the best-known native species from the Galapagos Islands. The tortoise is part of a large tortoise species that includes 15 subspecies within the genus Chelonoidis. 12 of those species are still alive today and include three from mainland South America, while 3 of those subspecies are extinct.

Not only is the Galapagos Tortoise part of the largest living species of tortoise in the world, tipping the scales at 919 lbs at the most, the Galapagos Tortoise is also one of the longest-lived vertebrates in the world. A captive tortoise named Harriet lived for 175 years. The tortoises are native to all seven of the Galapagos Islands in the chain.
