For the first time in the history of this vaunted coin series, a new design element is coming to the series. While Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design will remain on the obverse of the coins going forward, John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design will be replaced. US Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Emily Damstra, a veteran of many coin programs from the Royal Canadian Mint, has created a depiction of the bald eagle in flight with its wings behind its back as it flies with an oak branch in its talons. The 2021 release will feature coins with both the Walking Liberty-Heraldic Eagle designs and the Walking Liberty-Bald Eagle design.
All of the 2021 1 oz Silver American Eagles offered here are perfect specimens. The NGC issues a Mint State 70 certification when the specimens have full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws of any kind.
Walking Liberty features on the obverse side of 2021 Silver American Eagles. This design shows Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure as she holds out her right hand toward the sun and carries the branches of oak and laurel in her left hand. Adolph A. Weinman created this design in 1916 and it originally featured on the US Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is showcased in the reverse design of the 2021 1 oz Silver American Eagle for the final time. This design from John Mercanti was modernized in 1986 for the release of this series. It shows a triangular cluster of 13 stars over the eagle’s head, with an olive branch in one talon and the arrows of war in the other.
