The Silver Emu Series debuted at the Perth Mint in 2018. Since its introduction, the series has maintained a steady, but low, annual mintage of only 30,000 coins. The coins often sell out quickly at the mint and with authorized dealers. A new design has featured on the reverse of the coins each year, with this 2021 design offering the first glimpse of a young hatchling in an emu pairing on the reverse side.
All of the 2021 1 oz Silver Australian Emus are available to purchase individually or with special packaging for multiples. Individual coins ship in capsules, with multiples of 20 offered in sealed rolls and multiples of 100 offered in a box. The box contains a total of five rolls inside, each one with 20 coins. All of the coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
On the obverse of 2021 Silver Australian Emus is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The sixth vision of Her Majesty to appear on Australian coins, this design was initially created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint of England. It now features widely on Perth Mint and Royal Australian Mint coinage, having been used first on Australian coins in 2018. The portrait is a right-profile relief that captures the Queen at the age of 89.
The reverse side of the 2021 1 oz Silver Emu features an adult with its young hatchling near a body of water. The adult with the young hatchling is most likely a male emu. Though females lay several eggs following mating season, it is the male emu that cares for the egg during the eight-week incubation period and then continues to nurture the young emu after it hatches.
