The Chinese dragon is deeply rooted in the culture, mythology, and folklore of people in China and throughout Asia. The first symbols of the dragon as an object of worship date back thousands of years into Chinese history. In fact, the oldest known statue depicting a dragon was found near modern-day Henan in 1987. It is believed to date back to the fifth millennium BCE and comes from the Yangshao culture.

The obverse visuals of the 2021 Silver Australian Rectangular Dragon focus on Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile effigy of the Queen was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint of England. Serving as the fifth-generation British effigy since 2016, it began to appear on Australian coins in 2018 and represents the sixth-generation effigy of Her Majesty on Australian coins. In it, she is aged 89 and wears the George IV State Diadem Crown.

On the reverse side of 2021 1 oz Silver Rectangular Dragons is a new depiction of the beast. The famed creature of Chinese lore is not like its Western European counterparts. More of a serpent in nature, the dragon shown here is coiled in the shape of a figure eight and its face is far larger and more prominent in the design field than past designs in this collection.
