With designs from John Mercanti on the reverse side each year, the Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle is a worthy competitor for the Silver American Eagles of the United States Mint. In fact, the eagle design is not the only thing that connects these two coins to one another. Mercanti was a US Mint engraver and artist for more than four decades and finished his career in 2010 after serving the final four years as the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint. Now, 2021 1 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagles are available to you for purchase online at Silver.com.

Silver Wedge Tail Eagles were introduced by the Perth Mint in 2014. The mint launched the coins with John Mercanti signed on to provide the designs of the eagle on the reverse. In 2014 and 2015, the Perth Mint used the same design of the eagle on the reverse. This was done again in 2016 and 2017, with a new design introduced in 2016 that was then repeated in 2017.

2018 brought two important changes to the series at the Perth Mint. First and foremost, the Perth Mint enhanced the metal content of the coins from .999 fine silver to .9999 fine silver. Additionally, the popularity of the coin program led the Perth Mint to begin issuing new designs on the reverse with each new date mark.

The obverse side of 2021 1 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagles features the new sixth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. First released on an Australian coin in 2018, it gained greater use in 2019 and is now the lone effigy of the Queen featured on the obverse of coins from the Perth Mint.

On the reverse field of the 2021 Silver Wedge Tail Eagle is another new design for the series. this year’s wedge tail shows the powerful aerial predator with its pretty in its grasp. The eagle is flying through the sky flexing its powerful wings as its gaze is fixed on the snake its grasps in its talons.
