The images of Britannia and the Oriental Border element capture some of England’s longest-running and/or historic design elements on coinage. Britannia has the longest history of any British coin design, dating all the way back to the 1st century AD when the Roman Empire still held the British Isles as a province of the empire. During the reign of Emperor Hadrian, the Romans issued provincial coinage with an image of a Britannia figure.

Since 1672, Britannia has regularly featured on British coinage. Her effigy was restored to British currency at that time during the reign of King Charles II. As for the Oriental Border theme, the Royal Mint revived this element from the historic British Trade Dollar of the late-19th century. The Trade Dollar was largely used for trade in China and Southeast Asia following Britain’s successes in its Opium Wars against China.

The obverse side of 2021 1 oz Silver British Oriental Border Britannias includes a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This image was developed as the fifth-generation effigy by Jody Clark in 2015 and debuted on coins starting with the 2016 date mark. It captures the Queen at the age of 89.

On the reverse field of 2021 Silver British Oriental Border Britannias is the Philip Nathan image of Britannia. Designed in 1987, it shows Britannia’s figure facing forward as her head looks back to the left (her right) as she holds the trident in her right hand. Her left hand is resting on a shield with the Union Jack on it and that hand clutches an olive branch.
