Known as the Knights of Malta, these warriors were founded by Blessed Gerard in 1099 in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. A Catholic order, the knights formed both a religious and military order. In this design, the knights form up on horseback and prepare to charge in battle.

The reverse face of the 2021 1 oz Silver Knights of the Past Coins features a depiction of the seal of the issuing authority. The Central Bank of Malta was formed in 1968, four years after the State of Malta was formed in 1964 and six years before the formation of the Republic of Malta.
