The Lord of the Rings is an epic novel that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien in the mid-20th century. It was a follow-up to his 1937 children’s book The Hobbit, but took Tolkien a great deal of time to write. Tolkien wrote the book in stages between 1937 and 1949. The book went on to become one of the best-selling books ever with sales in excess of 150 million copies.

In the 1990s, the book was picked up by Hollywood and turned into three feature films. In those films, even more fans of the genre were introduced to the characters of Middle Earth. Included among that cast was the elf Legolas, a gifted warrior who would help lead the pushback against the Dark Lord Sauron.

The obverse of 2021 Silver Niue Chibi Lord of the Rings Legolas Shaped Coins comes with a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a 1998 design from Ian Rank-Broadley. It shows the Queen with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head, a jewelry piece said to be the Queen’s favorite.

On the reverse of 2021 1 oz Silver Chibi Lord of the Rings Legolas Shaped Coins is an image of Legolas as a chibi character. Chibi is Japanese slang for a caricature style that depicts figures with short, stubby bodies and oversized heads. Legolas is captured here with his bright, blue eyes, pointed ears, and long blonde hair.
