Gingerbread dates back to the 15th century in England, with shaped gingerbread dating to the 16th century and the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It is said that Her Majesty would have gingerbread shapes made in the form of her important guests when she had visiting dignitaries at her court.

The obverse of 2021 Silver Niue Chibi Christmas Gingerbread Man Shaped Coins comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait of Her Majesty found on this side was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and was designed for the Royal Mint as the fourth-generation effigy to grace British coins. In the design, she is shown in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

On the reverse side of the 2021 1 oz Silver Chibi Christmas Gingerbread Man Shaped Coins is a colorized depiction of a Gingerbread Man. True to form, it is a humanoid figure with stubby arms and legs. In this Chibi theme, it has a much larger head compared to the rest of the body. This Gingerbread Man has already had a bite taken out of its head, and the colorization includes brown for the body, various colors for the buttons on its chest, white icing stripes, and a red-and-green scarf. This impressive design was created by Trinity Gritter and was the winner of New Zealand Mint’s 2021 Design a Chibi Coin competition.
