The obverse design of this coin utilizes frosted devices on mirrored fields to create an eye-catching image of Europa riding a bull across a flat landscape (which could double as the top of the ocean). In the story of Europa in Greek mythology, she is abducted by Zeus, who disguises himself as a bull to get close to her (and potentially hide his desire for Europa from the jealous Hera). Zeus spends time among the herd of Europa’s father as a tame bull, and eventually she pets him and then climbs on his back. That gives him the opportunity to run off, jump in the sea and swim to the island of Crete. Eventually, Europa marries a king of Crete and becomes a queen; the continent of Europe is named after her.

The reverse design also employs frosted devices over mirrored fields. The image on the reverse is Queen Elizabeth II’s right-facing effigy. The portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 for the UK Royal Mint, and it was the official image for UK coinage through 2015 when a new effigy was created. Ian Rank-Broadley’s design is still used widely throughout the globe, especially in nations that must keep Her Majesty’s image on coinage. You can easily recognize the image because the initials IRB appear just below the neck.
