The Australian Platypus Series is one of Perth Mint’s traditionally-themed bullion coin collections. The semiaquatic mammal has been depicted on platinum bullion coins at Perth Mint for years now, but more recent introductions from the mint have seen gold and silver coins added to the series. Now, 2021 1.5 oz Silver Australian Platypus Coins are available to you for purchase online from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins ship to you inside individual protective flips, plastic tubes of 15 coins, or boxes of 150 coins!
  • Beautiful silver release in the Australian Platypus Series!
  • Mintage is unlimited through 2021!
  • Consists of 1.5 Troy ounces of .9999 fine silver in BU condition.
  • Issued a face value of $2 (AUD) by Australia.
  • Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • Platypus on the reverse.
  • Designed by Jennifer McKenna.

The platypus is arguably one of the most unique animal species in the world. However, when European naturalists first discovered the species, it was believed that the animal the individuals were viewing was a hoax. With the body and tail of a beaver, a duck bill, and the feet of an otter, many believed the specimen was merely a sewn together cadaver.

It is not only the physical features of the platypus that make it a unique and distinctive species. These egg-laying mammals are semiaquatic, and the males of the species are one of just a few species of mammals with venom. The male platypus has a small spur on its back foot that can deliver a venom that, though not deadly, can cause severe pain in humans.

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of the 2021 1.5 oz Silver Australian Platypus Coins. This design from Jody Clark was created in 2015 and debuted as the fifth-generation portrait from the Royal Mint. This effigy of the Queen features the George IV State Diadem Crown. In this design, the Queen is shown at the age of 89.

A platypus is featured in the reverse design of 2021 Silver Australian Platypus Coins. This design element shows a platypus swimming beneath a lilypad. Though you cannot see the waves or surface of the water, you can see the depth of the field thanks to the length of the stem on the lilypad.

These 2021 1.5 oz Silver Australian Platypus Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins in this series are available individually in protective flips. Multiples are available in plastic tubes of 15 coins or boxes of 150 coins.
