Mama Quilla was the goddess of the moon in Incan mythology. As the Incans viewed their deities, Mama Quilla was third in the pantheon of highly-revered figures behind the God of the Sun, Inti, and the God of Thunder, Illapu. There were certain communities within the Incan Empire that viewed Mama Quilla as the most important deity, such as coastal communities.
As it relates to Mama Quilla, the Inca believed her to be responsible for ensuring there was light in the world even in the dark of night. Incan people lived in great fear of lunar eclipses, believing that if Mama Quilla were to die or disappear that the world could be tipped into eternal darkness. More importantly, whenever Mama Quilla shed tears, it was believed those tears were made of silver and fell to Earth for the Inca to mine.
The obverse of 2021 2 oz Antique Silver Tuvalu Tears of the Moon Coins comes with a bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted in right-profile relief in a design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. The effigy of the Queen is flanked around the design element by a symbol known as chakana, or Incan crosses. The clear Perspex field on this side is flat and offers a view of the silver particles.
On the reverse side of 2021 Antique Silver Tuvalu Tears of the Moon Coins is a depiction of Mama Quilla at the top. Her figure wraps around the edge of the design field and is under attack by a serpent, one of the factors the Ancient Inca feared would bring about total darkness. The Perspex case on this side is domed, giving a greater visual of the silver particles in the purified mineral oil.
2021 2 oz Antique Silver Tuvalu Tears of the Moon Coins are packaged inside Mama Quilla-styled presentation boxes.
