The coins are issued for the British Virgin Islands, a British overseas territory that actually uses the United States dollar as its official currency. Additionally, the coins feature the Lady Liberty effigy from George T. Morgan, designer of the Morgan Dollar, on the reverse.

George T. Morgan was born in Birmingham, England, was started his career as a die engraver. In 1878, he moved to the United States and took on a job as an Assistant Engraver at the United States Mint. He created the Morgan Dollar coin design, arguably one of the most prominent US silver dollar designs. He finished his career at the United States Mint as the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, a position he held until his death in 1925.
