Germania was first brought to life in a painting in 1848. The concept of Germania was revived and modernized by the German Empire as it began to take shape following the Revolutions of 1848. She was often depicted in front-facing relief with a national sword known as the Reichsschwert. Other imagery included a laurel wreath of oak leaves, symbolic of strength, and an olive branch as a sign of peace. Additionally, she was depicted with a banner bearing the German flag.
The obverse of these 2021 Silver Germania Rounds comes with the third new design in the series. The image of Germania shown here captures her figure in front-facing relief as she stands at the bow of a ship. Taking on the role of leader for her people, Germania is dressed in her battle armor with Reichsschwert unsheathed and ready to defend her people. Germania is wearing the laurel wreath crown and has a banner in her left hand that is flapping in the wind.
On the reverse side of 2021 2 oz Silver Germania Rounds is a depiction of the seal of the Germania Mint. The image of the double-headed eagle comes with a single eagle body, with one head looking left and the other head looking right. The eagle clutches lightning bolts that are tipped with arrowheads in its talons. This symbol originated with the Roman god Janus and was popularly used in heraldic symbolism for thousands of years.
