Each of the 2021 3/4 oz Silver Canadian Great Horned Owl Reverse Proof Coins comes with stunning visual contrast between the design element and the field of the coin. Reverse-proof coins have mirrored design elements overlaying frosted background fields. The 2021 date mark in the Animal Portrait Series is the fifth of the collection. The coins in this series celebrate some of the common wildlife found throughout North America and in Canada, in particular. The Great Horned Owl is the first bird to feature in the series and represents the most widely distributed owl in the Americas.
The obverse of 2021 Silver Canadian Great Horned Owl Reverse Proof Coins features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty features on all Canadian coins, circulation and bullion alike, and her effigy is regularly updated to reflect her age. The longest-reigning monarch in English history, Elizabeth II is now featured in the fourth-generation design on Canadian coins. Susanna Blunt created this effigy in 2003 and is the only one of her reign to date to lack a crown.
On the reverse side of the 2021 3/4 oz Silver Great Horned Owl Reverse Proof Coins is an image of the owl. Also known as the tiger owl or hoot owl, the Great Horned Owl is known as such because of the tall feathers found on its head. These tall feathers have often been mistaken as exterior ears on the head of the owl and tower so high that they resemble horns. Above the design of the owl is a maple leaf privy that has been micro-laser engraved. Inside the privy is a “21” mark that is only visible under magnification.
