The Philadelphia Mint last struck BU Silver Eagles in 2000, the second in a brief two-year period of production at Philadelphia that took place during a transition from the San Francisco Mint to the West Point Mint. The former issued the coins from 1986 to 1998 and the latter has issued the coins since 2001.
As the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in market turmoil that sent investors scrambling for precious metals, it also forced the US Mint to reduce employee capacity at the West Point Mint to accommodate employee safety. During a two-week period in early 2020, the West Point Mint closed and the Philadelphia Mint provided emergency coining. As the situation persists in 2021, the Philadelphia Mint has again provided emergency coining.
The obverse of 2021 (P) 1 oz Silver American Eagles features the Walking Liberty design. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, the image depicts Liberty walking in left-profile relief from right to left across the coin’s design field.
On the reverse side of 2021 (P) Silver Eagles is an image of the heraldic eagle. In use for the final time before it is replaced in mid-2021 by a new design, the heraldic eagle shows a bald eagle in front-facing relief supporting the US national shield.
2021 (P) 1 oz Silver American Eagles listed here are near-perfect specimens. A coin with a Mint State 69 grade showcases full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws must be located outside of the primary focal points of the coin and are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. The included First Strike label indicates a specimen received for grading within the first 30 days following the release by the US Mint.
