For the first time in the history of the American Eagle program’s gold and silver coins, new design elements were introduced in 2021. As part of the 35th-anniversary celebration for the series, the US Mint issue two versions of the coins throughout the year. Type 1 coins had the original reverse design and were followed by Type 2 coins with the new reverse design element. The 2021 Proof Gold Eagle release from the United States Mint included Type 1 and Type 2 coins. The Type 1 coins were issued from January to June and feature the original reverse design from Miley Busiek. The Type 2 coins were issued from July to the end of the year with the new reverse design from Jennie Norris.

The obverse of 2021-W Proof Gold Eagles comes with the iconic image of Liberty. This front-facing relief captures the full-length vision of Liberty walking toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The field includes a depiction of the U.S. Capitol Building at her feet and sun rays on the horizon. There is a ring of 50 stars around the design element.

On the reverse side of 2021-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles is the all-new bald eagle depiction from Jennie Norris. This left-profile relief shows the head of a bald eagle with great detail in the physical characteristics of the bird.
