Introduced in 2006 by the United States Mint, the Gold American Buffalo was the first-ever 24-karat gold coin from the United States. Designed to compete with the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Series and other .9999 fine gold bullion coins, the US Mint offers the coins predominantly as Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof coins. Now, 2021-W 1 oz Proof Gold American Buffalos are available to you for purchase online at Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins ship to you inside of capsules and presentation boxes with a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • 16th year of availability for the Proof Gold American Buffalo!
  • Mintages are limited!
  • Consists of One Troy ounce of .9999 fine gold.
  • Issued a face value of $50 (USD) by the United States.
  • The obverse features an indigenous figure.
  • On the reverse is the American bison.
  • Comes with a “W” mint mark.

When the US Mint unveiled the Gold American Buffalos in 2006, the series featured 1 oz gold in Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof options. These are the only versions of the coin available on an annual basis from the US Mint, with both coins struck at the West Point Mint. Aside from the visual finish, the best way to differentiate the two is the presence of the “W” mint mark behind the figure’s head on the obverse.

On two separate occasions, the US Mint has issued special versions of the Gold American Eagle aimed at collectors. In 2008, the Proof Gold Buffalos were issued in three fractional-ounce weights of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. That was the only year those fractional-ounce proof gold coins were issued. That same year also saw a one-time release of a Burnished Gold Buffalo in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. 2013 was the only other year with a unique release, a reverse proof coin in honor of the 100th anniversary of the design of the coins.

The obverse side of 2021-W Proof Gold American Buffalos features an indigenous figure in right-profile relief. This design from James Earle Fraser was created in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel and combined the facial features of three real-life native figures to create a distinctive individual.

On the reverse face of 2021-W Proof Gold Buffalos is the American bison. Also designed by Fraser in 1913, the image here was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo in New York City.

These 2021-W 1 oz Proof Gold American Buffalos are available inside of protective capsules and housed in wooden presentation boxes. The coins come with a Certificate of Authenticity from the US Mint and feature frosted designs overlaying mirrored fields.
