This breakout consisted of Type 1 coins with the John Mercanti original reverse and Type 2 coins with the new Emily Damstra reverse. Only the BU and W-Proof Silver Eagles were issued in both Type 1 and Type 2 releases. In 2021, the release of Type 2 Silver Eagles marked the start of a new era for the series. Since 1986, John Mercanti’s version of the heraldic eagle had graced the reverse side of all versions of the Silver American Eagle. This design was replaced with the Type 2 release, marking the first change in the design of the Silver Eagle during its three-decade-plus history. Emily Damstra is the designer of the new bald eagle image on the reverse of the coins. She submitted her design as one of 35 possible replacements for the heraldic eagle design.
The obverse of 2021-W Proof Silver American Eagles comes with the Walking Liberty design. In this design from Adolph A. Weinman, Liberty’s full-length figure is captured in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon with her right hand extended, her left carrying the branches of oak and laurel, and the American flag draped around her figure.
On the reverse side of the 2021-W 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle is an image of the American bald eagle. The new design that took over with the Type 2 release, this image from Emily Damstra shows a bald eagle descending into view with its wings raised and its talons clutching an oak branch.
