The 2021 release of the Proof Gold Eagle is unique in a number of ways. The date mark is the 35th anniversary for the series, a milestone that only a handful of other major bullion collections have reached. As part of the 35th anniversary of the series, the United States Mint is introducing a new reverse design element to the series.
However, given the continued extreme demand for American Eagles in 2020 and 2021, the US Mint needed to continue consistent coining through late 2020 and early 2021, resulting in early releases in 2021 with the original reverse design. This means that in mid-2021 the mint will pause coining briefly to shift the focus to employing the new dies in the coining presses to get the new reverse designs in production. This makes 2021 the only release of the series with two different design combinations.
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse side of 2021-W Four-Coin Proof Gold American Eagles in this set. This design of Liberty was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was revolutionary at the time. Breaking the mold from designs based in the Classical Antiquity era of human civilization, the new design shows Liberty’s full figure walking toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
American bald eagles grace the reverse field of the coins in the 2021-W Four-Coin Proof Gold Eagle Set. As mentioned, this is the final issue of these coins with Miley Busiek’s depiction of a male eagle flying above a nest with a female eagle and hatchling inside.
