The coin showcases the majestic peak of the Matterhorn, easily one of the world’s most famous mountains. Found on the border between the Italian and Swiss Alps, the sheer faces of the Matterhorn have been a long-time draw for climbers and explorers despite — or perhaps partly because of — the fact that attempted ascents have claimed the lives of more than 500 climbers, among them four members of the party that first attained the summit in 1865. More recently, the sides of the Matterhorn have been used for projections of country flags in a show of international solidarity during the COVID pandemic.
The obverse features a stylized view of that iconic peak, seen from the angle of approach taken by the very same parties that attempted to scale it in 1865, along with the inscriptions “MATTERHORN,” “4,478 m” to denote the mountain’s awe-inspiring scale, and an ice ax.
The reverse features a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as frequently seen on circulation coins in Commonwealth countries. It also bears the inscriptions “Queen Elizabeth II,” “Cook Islands,” “5 Dollars” and “2022.”
