The African Wildlife Series is a product of the Bavarian State Mint. Introduced in 1999 as the Zambia Elephant Series, the collection stayed that way from 1999 to 2003 and was transitioned to the Somalia Elephant in 2004. The coins began to expand in the years to come as the popularity of the program expanded.

From the original 1 oz gold and 1 oz silver coins, the series started to drastically expand in 2016. The silver coins gained three fractional-ounce coins and three weights between 1 oz and 1 Kilo silver. The gold series, likewise, expanded. The collection now features 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/25 oz, 1/50 oz, 1 Gram, and 1/2 Gram gold coins alongside the original 1 oz gold coin.

The obverse of 2022 1/4 oz Gold Somalia Elephants features an image of the Somali coat of arms. In this design, the national shield comes with a crowned top and a field of horizontal lines. At the center of this field, you will find a single star. The shield is supported by leopards on either side with spears and fern leaves beneath.

On the reverse of 2022 1/4 oz Gold Elephants is an image of the African bush elephant. In the case of the 2022 design, the field includes two elephants from a herd. Here, you will see a mature elephant guiding its young calf along the savanna as the two are shown in left-profile relief.
