Historians believe that the first residents of Yosemite settled in the region between 4000 and 8000 years ago. These early settlers were hunter-gatherers who subsisted on deer, other game, and acorn meal. This group called themselves the Ahwahnechee and resided in what was known as Ahwahnee Valley. Their way of life was upended in 1848, when European settlers seeking gold began to invade the region. They brought with them diseases such as smallpox that devastated the native population. The Ahwahnechee tribe was eventually moved to a reservation, which put a full stop to their rich way of life.
