The Royal Canadian Mint has twice added security elements to the physical design of its Gold Maple Leaf coins. In 2013, a micro-laser engraved privy mark was added to the reverse of the coins. This textured maple leaf includes the last two digits of the date mark at its center, but this 22 inscription is only visible under magnification. As of 2015, the coins also have radial lines engraved in the background on both the obverse and reverse.
The obverse of 2022 Gold Canadian Maple Leafs features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty has graced Canadian coins since 1952 and this is the fourth-generation portrait of Elizabeth II to feature on Canadian coins. It was designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.
On the reverse side of 2022 1 oz Gold Maple Leafs is a depiction of the sugar maple leaf. Designed for this series in 1979 by Walter Ott, the sugar maple leaf as shown here now features on all versions and weights of the coin.
