The South African Mint issued the first Silver Krugerrands in 2017. This date marked the 50th anniversary of the broader Krugerrand Series and included the two first-ever silver versions of the popular investment-grade bullion coin. In 2017, a 1 oz silver proof was among the options issued by the South African Mint and the Rand Refinery. Now, 2022 1 oz Proof Silver South African Krugerrands are available to you for purchase online at Silver.com.

In 1967, the South African government partnered with the Rand Refinery through the South African Mint to release a new bullion coin series. The Krugerrand was so-named as a combination of Paul Kruger’s last name and the national fiat currency of the modern Republic of South Africa, the Rand.

From 1967 to 1980, the only coin available in the series was a 1 oz gold coin. In the 1980s, fractional-ounce gold coins were introduced into the series as well. In 2017, the 50th anniversary of the series was celebrated with the introduction of a Premium Uncirculated coin and a Proof coin. Today, the PU coin is still in production as a BU specimen, with the 1 oz Proof still available to this day.

The obverse of 2022 Proof Silver South African Krugerrands comes with a portrait of Paul Kruger. A Boer statesman and military leader, Paul was elected as the first President of the South African Republic and served through the final decades of the 19th century. This portrait was created in the 1890s for the gold coins of the South African Pound.

On the reverse side of the 2022 1 oz Proof Silver Krugerrand is a depiction of the Springbok antelope. The antelope is shown here in right-profile relief as it pronks along the plains of southern Africa.

These 2022 1 oz Proof Silver South African Krugerrands are available to you with individual packaging. The coins are packaged in protective displays with a Certificate of Authenticity available. Proof coins have frosted design elements with mirrored background fields.
