Silver American Eagles took off in a new direction at the midpoint of the 2021 release. In honor of the 35th anniversary of the series, the United States Mint introduced a new reverse design element for the coins in this series. However, the 2021 release was split between the first half of the year with the heraldic eagle on the reverse still, and the second half of the year with the new bald eagle design. As of 2022, the series has officially retired the heraldic eagle and continues forward with only the new design from Emily Damstra available.

On the obverse of 2022 Silver American Eagles is a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief. This full-length figure of Liberty was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and is known as Walking Liberty. Originally featured on the US half dollar until 1947, it has graced the obverse of all versions of the Silver American Eagle since the program’s debut in 1986.

The reverse side of these 2022 1 oz Silver Eagles comes with a new vision of the American bald eagle. Designed by Emily Damstra in 2020, this visual captures the bald eagle as it swoops into view with a large oak branch in its talons.
