Emily Damstra is the designer behind the new reverse image of the bald eagle that debuted on the Silver Eagles in mid-2021. Ms. Damstra’s design replaces that of the heraldic eagle from John Mercanti, the original reverse design that featured on the coins from 1986 when the series started until June 2021 when the US Mint paused production to switch over to this new reverse visual.

The obverse of 2022 Silver American Eagles features the iconic bust of Liberty known as Walking Liberty. This full-length portrait of Liberty was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and shows Liberty as she walks along the horizon toward a mountain and the sun with her right hand outstretched. She carries the branches of oak and laurel in her left hand as the American flag is draped around her figure.

On the reverse of 2022 1 oz Silver Eagles is a depiction of the new bald eagle design for the series. Following its mid-2021 debut, the new design now takes center stage in its first full-year release in 2022. It shows the bald eagle in a three-quarter profile as it swoops down into view with an oak branch in its talons.
