In 2021, the US Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the Silver American Eagle with the introduction of a new reverse design element. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and surging demand for silver, the US Mint had to start the 2021 production cycle with its existing dies featuring the original heraldic eagle design.
From January to June 2021, the Silver Eagle was struck with the heraldic eagle design on the reverse. In July, the US Mint briefly paused production to replace the dies in use in its coining presses so it could begin to produce 2021 Silver Eagles with the new reverse design. Emily Damstra’s image of the bald eagle is now the only reverse visual element in the series starting with the 2022 release of the coins.
Obverse visuals on 2022 1 oz Silver American Eagles include the historic Walking Liberty portrait. Developed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, this vision of Liberty in left-profile relief first featured on US coins with the 1916 Half Dollar and featured on that denomination until 1947.
Reverse images on the 2022 Silver American Eagle include the all-new bald eagle design. Created in 2020 by Emily Damstra, it debuted on the Silver Eagle in mid-2021 and shows a bald eagle swooping down into view as its flexes its wings behind its back. The bird is shown with a large oak branch in its talons, a symbol of power and strength.
