Silver Kookaburras debuted in 1990 with only a 1 oz silver coin available featuring a face value of $5 (AUD). In 1991, the 1 oz silver coin was the only option available again with the same face value. However, in 1992, the series gained a 1 kilo, 10 oz, and 2 oz silver coin and saw its 1 oz silver coin face value adjusted to $1 (AUD).
In 2011, Perth Mint dropped the 2 oz silver coin from the collection, retaining the 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kilo silver coins as the annual options. For 2021, the 1 oz coin has a maximum mintage of 500,000 coins. The other two weights have unlimited mintages, meaning only that Perth will strike the coins through the end of 2022.
The obverse side of 2022 Silver Australian Kookaburras offers a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. In this effigy, the Queen is aged 89 years old. The design was created in 2015 by Jody Clark and features as the sixth-generation portrait for Australian coins.
On the reverse field of 2022 1 oz Silver Kookaburras, you will find a new design from Natasha Muhl. The design shows a kookaburra in the foreground resting on the edge of a bird bath. In the background, flowers from the Agapanthus bloom in the background field. The security letter is engraved on this face of the coin and is only visible under magnification.
