The Silver Wedge Tail Eagle Series has proven to be one of Perth’s most successful releases in the last decade. The program has had limited mintages set each year and has experienced a sellout in every release year to date. The designs on the reverse come from John Mercanti, the former 10th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who retired from his post in 2010.
The obverse of 2022 Silver Wedge Tail Eagles features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This bust of the Queen is the sixth of her reign to feature on Australian coins and is the first Australian portrait to include her full neckline and shoulders within the design field. Her Majesty is shown here at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
On the reverse side of 2022 1 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagles is a depiction of the largest bird of prey from the Australian continent. Present throughout Australia, portions of New Guinea, and the state of Tasmania, the wedge tail eagle is among the largest species of eagle in the world today. The name for the birds comes from the wedge-shaped tail of the creature.
