The Silver Maple Leaf is one of four versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf the Royal Canadian Mint offers each year. The first option made available was the Gold Maple Leaf, followed by the Silver Maple Leaf and Platinum Maple Leaf in the same year. The last coin issued, and available intermittently, was the Palladium Maple Leaf.
The obverse of the 2022 Silver Canadian Maple Leaf features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief without a crown or tiara, a first in the portraits of the Queen on Canadian coins during her reign. The portrait was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, just the second Canadian artist ever to create a monarch portrait.
On the reverse side of the 2022 1 oz Silver Maple Leaf is a depiction of the sugar maple leaf. Long a symbol of early French trading outposts in Canada, and early provinces, the sugar maple leaf remains the official emblem of Canada. This design includes a thin layer of 24-karat gold, a feature that has been applied only to the image of the sugar maple leaf.
