Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins from the Royal Canadian Mint debuted in 1979. The series launched with a 1 oz gold coin in 1979 and were originally only available in that weight. From November 1982 to 1994, the series underwent a number of expansions that grew the collection to a new point.
Gold Maple Leafs expanded during the aforementioned timeframe with the inclusion of five new fractional-ounce coins. The Silver Maple Leaf came into the fold in 1988 as a 1 oz silver coin and remains as such today. Additional introductions in the series include a Platinum Maple Leaf released alongside the Silver Maple Leaf, and a Palladium Maple Leaf.
The obverse side of 2022 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leafs features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this design, the Queen is shown without a crown for the first time in her reign on a Canadian coin. Susanna Blunt is the designer of the portrait on this side of the coin and is just the second Canadian artist to ever develop a monarch portrait for Canadian coins.
On the reverse field of 2022 Silver Canadian Maple Leafs is the sugar maple leaf. The maple leaf has been a symbol used by villages and local government agencies in Canada since the early settlers from France and Britain began arriving in the area to bolster the fur trade. Both sides of the coin have radial lines in the background field. The reverse has a micro-laser engraved maple leaf privy. This privy mark includes the final two digits of the date mark, 22, at the center and these digits are only visible under magnification.
