The modern Silver Athena Owl release features a reverse design inspired by the owl of Athena from the tetradrachm. In Ancient Greek mythology, the little owl was traditionally depicted alongside Athena in many artistic renderings. Since Athena was the virgin goddess of wisdom, the owl has historically been associated with wisdom as well because of its connection to the goddess.

The obverse of the 2022 Silver Athena Owl Stackable Coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this effigy shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

On the reverse 2022 1 oz Silver Niue Athena Owl Coins is a replication of the historic owl of Athena design. It shows the bird on a small perch with a sprig of olive behind it and a crescent moon above it. Both fields have a hammered finish in the background with interlocking teeth along the edge that makes for strong, secure stacking for these coins.
