The United States Navy traces its roots to the founding on the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775, during the Revolutionary War. The Continental Navy was disbanded after the war, but a new US Navy was born on March 27, 1794, with the passage of the Naval Act of 1794. From that original fleet of six heavy frigates, the US Navy has grown into the largest naval fleet in the world. It has a larger active fleet than the next 13 navies combined and boasts a total of 480 ships, with the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet.
The obverse of the 2022 Silver US Mint Navy Medal features a combination of the past and the present in the United States Navy. In the background, Old Ironsides sails again. The USS Constitution was one of the original six heavy frigates built for the US Navy. It is the oldest active naval vessel in the world and the only one of those original six heavy frigates still around. In the foreground, the modern destroyer, the USS John Paul Jones, sails through the waters as a squadron of F18 Hornets flies overhead in formation.
On the reverse side of 2022 2.5 oz Silver Navy Medals is a depiction of one of the US Navy’s greatest traditions. Here, American sailors man the rail as their ship enters port. The American flag is flying overhead.
