In 1986, the United States Mint first issued the Gold Eagles. The series started with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz BU coins available, as well as a 1 oz gold Proof coin available. In 1987 and 1988, the three fractional-ounce coins were added to the Proof Series. In 2006, the mint introduced the Burnished Series, originally offering fractional-ounce coins, but later dropping those in favor of just a 1 oz gold coin.

In 2021, the mint marked the 35th anniversary of the series with an all-new reverse design. The 2021 release schedule included Type 1 coins in the first half of the year featuring the original reverse from Miley Busiek, and Type 2 coins from July onward with the new reverse design from Jennie Norris.

The obverse of 2022-W Proof Gold American Eagles features a front-facing relief of Liberty. She is shown here walking toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.

On the reverse of 2022-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles is the image of an American bald eagle. This new design from Jennie Norris offers a glimpse of the bird’s head in left-profile relief with intricate details for its figure.

These 2022-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagles are available in PF70 condition. A PF70 coin showcases full, original mint luster and has no detracting flaws of any type. UCAM specimens are proof coins with strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear fields. Early Release coins are those the NGC receives for certification within 30 days of release from the US Mint.
