Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013, the release of this coin design coincided with a decision by the United States to honor the contributions of the joint American-Canadian unit. The passage of a bill in 2013 in the US Congress awarded members of the unit the Congressional Gold Medal.
Bestowed by Congress alone, the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are the highest civilian awards available in the United States. Those who earn the honor have “performed an achievement that has impacted American history and culture in a manner that has been deemed a major achievement.”
The Royal Canadian Mint issued the First Special Service Force design on four different coins in total. There were two gold coins, available in 1/10 oz gold and ¼ oz gold, as well as ½ oz silver and these ¾ oz silver coins. Among them, some coins continue in production, but the ¾ oz Silver First Special Service Force Coin is no longer struck as of late 2013.
On the obverse of the First Special Service Force coin is the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s image appears on all Canadian coins, and has since 1953. This is the fourth-generation design of the Queen, and the first since her father’s to feature a monarch without a crown on their head.
The reverse of the ¾ oz Silver First Special Service Force Coin includes the shoulder patch worn on the uniforms of the Americans and Canadians who fought in the Devil’s Brigade. The arrowhead featured has “USA” engraved horizontally at the tip of the spearhead, with “Canada” engraved vertically down the center of the spear. To the left is a symbol of the United States, while the right features a symbol of Canada.
