The gold coins of the French Franc formed the backbone of a continental currency system that would become known as the Latin Monetary Union. The “Euro before the Euro,” the LMU was not a singular currency, per se, but rather a guideline for the size and purity of gold coins of a similar denomination, such as 20 or 40 face value. Introduced by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Gold 40 Francs coin was issued throughout the rest of the 19th century and into the early 20th century. Today, Gold 40 Francs France Coins from the reign of King Charles X are available to you online at Silver.com.

King Charles X came to the throne of France during the Second Restoration. He came to the throne in 1824 following the death of King Louis XVIII, a monarch who spent 23 years in exile during the French Revolution and Napoleon’s rule during the First French Empire. Charles X was deeply unpopular with the people of France due to a number of outdated practices he brought back into use.

All of the Gold 40 Francs France Coins listed here are former circulation pieces. As such, you can expect to see normal signs of wear and tear resulting from years of handling in circulation. The coins will show worn design reliefs with the potential for various detracting flaws throughout. The coins are available in protective flips with possible dates of 1824 to 1830.

Silver.com cannot promise a particular date mark at the moment of purchase. All items are picked to fulfill orders after payment has cleared. Your gold coins will be selected from available stock at that point in time. Please bear in mind that you could receive varying date marks or all matching date marks if you buy multiples.

On the obverse of Gold 40 Francs France Coins is an effigy of King Charles X. This right-profile portrait depicts Charles without a crown and includes inscriptions in French that identify the monarch and his title.

The reverse side of Gold 40 Francs Coins comes with a lesser version of the Royal Arms of France. This design includes a crown-topped shield with three fleurs de lis. The shield is flanked by a wreath and is accompanied by inscriptions of a date mark, face value, and a mint mark. Coins struck in Paris feature an A down near the date, while coins struck in Marseille have an MA near the date.
