The Gold Half Eagle was the very first gold coin authorized for production by the United States Congress. The Act of April 2, 1792 gave the United States Mint the power to strike a gold coin with a $5 face value. Known as Half Eagles, these coins were produced from 1795 to 1929 in various designs, including the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle, which is currently available through

Gold coin production remained relatively low during the early decades of America’s existence. It wasn’t until the discovery of gold in Georgia and the Carolinas in the 1830s that gold coins became increasingly common. Following the California Gold Rush, the United States Mint had plentiful resources to strike gold coins.

Liberty Half Eagle coins were the fifth design iteration in the Half Eagle coin series, and the longest running. Liberty Half Eagles were struck between 1839 and 1907. The original Liberty Half Eagles, struck between 1839 and 1866 featured only “United States of America” and “Five D” on the reverse. From 1877 to 1907, the motto “In God We Trust” was added to the reverse.

On the obverse side of the coin is the left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Her head is surrounded by 13 stars, with the year of minting featured below. The reverse features the heraldic eagle in the center, with the aforementioned engravings encircling it.

Each of the coins in this product listing is available in Very Fine condition. Coins in this condition show light to medium wear on minor features, such as the hair detail or feathers on the eagle. All major features on the coin remain sharp.

The United States Mint produced the Liberty Half Eagle coins at seven of its coining facilities. The Philadelphia, Carson City, Charlotte, Dahlonega, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mints all contributed to production.
