America’s hobo subculture is captured by the media in many forms, including poorly dressed individuals with knapsacks on the end of a stick or those same people roasting cans of beans over an open fire. Hobo subculture also included unique art forms, such as engraving designs onto circulating coins. No American coin was targeted more by hobos than the nickel. To commemorate this subculture, a new 5 oz Silver Antique Hobo Nickel Round is available on Silver.com for purchase while supplies last.

Each 5 oz Silver Antique Hobo Nickel Round in this product listing has an antique finish. What previously took decades of exposure and handling can now be achieved in the minting process with modern technology. Antique rounds are identifiable by the warm, subtle accents of the design that give it the appearance of age, even though it is a brand-new product.
Curcio’s hobo designs are inspired by the work of hobo artists who would engrave their own markings onto circulation nickels in the US during the 18th and 19th centuries. Curcio captures this perfectly in his interpretation of the Buffalo Nickel coin.
On the obverse of these rounds is a similar design set to Fraser’s Native American. Known as the fisherman in this design, Curcio uses a right-profile portrait of a fisherman with similar facial features and structures to Fraser’s Native American chieftain. The design even includes engravings of the word “Liberty” and the year of issue “1937,” the version of the Buffalo Nickel that inspired his design.
The reverse includes the buffalo in a unique position. The animal’s features are used to create the backdrop of a mountain range that frames a lake in the foreground. A solitary fisherman is shown sitting on a dock at the lake’s edge with his line in, hoping to catch his next meal.
