The new Silver Hobo Nickel Round Series features designs from Mr. The, a well-respected engraver and carver who has created numerous hobo carvings for silver rounds. He’s also considered a master of skeletal productions of historic coins, with work dating back to 2012.
For the third release in the Silver Hobo Nickel Round Series, Mr. The’s design moves away from traditional images of hobos to one of the most popular hobo designs. Skulls were commonplace examples of hobo craftsmanship on circulation coins during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the approach is enjoying a revival today.
The obverse face of each of these 5 oz Silver Antique Skulls and Scrolls Hobo Nickels features an image reminiscent of James Earle Fraser’s right-profile portrait of a Native American from the Buffalo Nickel. Instead, Mr. The features a skeletal figure in right-profile relief, along with a scroll edge design.
On the reverse of the round you’ll find his walking hobo design. The common reverse since the second release in the series, you’ll notice the hobo’s skeletal form is featured walking rather than his human form.
These 5 oz Silver Antique Skulls and Scrolls Hobo Nickel Rounds have an antique finish, which adds warmth to the design features and depth to the finish of the coin. It also gives the coin’s an aged appearance the reflects the longevity of the Buffalo Nickel from Fraser.
