James Earle Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design for the US Mint was a popular target for hobo artists looking to leave their mark in this world. The larger surface area and existing intricate design made it easy for hobos to carve extra details that weren’t readily noticeable.
The circulation of five-cent pieces at the turn of the 20th century was high, making for a readily available coin. The copper and alloy nature of the five-cent piece was malleable, making it easy for hobos to carve their own unique designs onto existing coins.
Each 5 oz Silver Antique Train Hobo Nickel Round available from Silver.com has a warm, subtle antique finish that adds depth and character to the design features. In the case of these rounds, it also recreates the appearance of the 1913 coins.
On the obverse is the image of a steam locomotive as it travels along the rails. It is encircled by wooden railway ties and has similar engravings to the original Buffalo Nickels, with the word “Liberty” and a year of issue as “1913” engraved on this face.
The 5 oz Silver Antique Train Hobo Nickel Round’s reverse features a hobo walking along, with a walking stick in one hand and a wooden pipe in his mouth. If you view the hobo horizontally, you’ll notice a similarity to the buffalo’s hump from Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design.
