The city of Tombstone was founded on a whim by a man named Ed Schieffelin who was just out “looking for rocks” in the Arizona wilderness. He found himself there with an army scouting group keeping an eye on Apache Indian movements in the Arizona Territory.
While others joked that Schieffelin would only find rocks for his tombstone out in the desert, he would eventually found the city of Tombstone because he discovered silver in the hills. The mines of Tombstone hit their peak between 1877 and 1890, with maximum estimates of the silver bullion extracted topping $2.04 billion in current US dollars.
On the obverse of each 5 oz Silver Scottsdale Tombstone Nugget is the engraving of “Tombstone” at the top, followed by “Arizona Territory” and “Silver Nugget.” Arizona did not gain admission to the Union until 1912, making it a territory at the time of Tombstone’s founding.
The reverse side of the bar has engravings arranged horizontally across the bar from left to right. These include “.999 Fine Silver,” “5 oz Troy,” and the seal of the Scottsdale Mint. The mint’s official logo features a male lion with a crown atop its head.
Each of these 5 oz Silver Scottsdale Tombstone Nugget bars ships in themed packaging. Individual bars arrive in a canvas pouch, while multiples of 100 arrive in wooden crates emblematic of the shipping means of the day.
Scottsdale Mint is one of the many private mints in America, and is located in Scottsdale, Arizona. The mint prides itself on the use of recycled silver from the photography and manufacturing industries, creating sustainable production of silver precious metal products.
