The fifth and final design for the Silver Norse God Series focuses on the most mischievous of Norse gods, Loki. He is one of the more interesting gods, possessing a background that seems disputed to this day depending upon the sources you read. Some have him as the blood brother to Odin, while others list him as Odin’s son and Thor’s brother. Whatever his role, he never backed away from a chance to create mischief. Right now, the 5 oz Antique Silver Norse God Series Loki Round is available on Silver.com.

Loki came from the race of giants in Norse mythology, and his daughter Hel served as the guardian of the underworld. Loki had three children, all of whom terrified Odin with their potential for mischief and evil.

Known as the God of Mischief, Loki is said to have switched sides at times during his life. At times he would aid the gods, while hindering them and threatening mankind at others. He developed a skill for shape shifting, which came in handy following his murder of the God of Light, Balder. He shape shifted into a salmon and swam away in a stream to escape.

On the obverse of each 5 oz Antique Silver Norse God Series Loki Round is the image of Loki, who is often depicted as handsome, graceful, and fair. It is said that after he was captured for Balder’s death, he was bound in a cave where snake venom dripped on his face. Each drop caused him to writhe violently, shaking the whole of the Earth.

The reverse of all rounds in this series depicts a member of the Valkyrie, which were Odin’s selected group of warrior maidens who were known as Choosers of the Slain. Engravings on this face include “Choosers of the Slain,” “Valkyrie,” and “1 Ounce .999 Fine Silver.”

Each of these 5 oz Antique Silver Norse God Series Loki Rounds is a mirrored proof with an antique finish. The antique patina adds the appearance of age, as well as warmth and subtlety to the design of the round.

Anonymous Mint developed these silver rounds in conjunction with coin creator Julie Lindquist. Luigi Badia sculpted the blanks for this series based upon the original Norse god artworks from Howard David Johnson. Osborne Precious Metals struck each of the rounds for this series.
