The fifth release in the American Western Skulls Collection was the second design in a row inspired by a character not only famous in the Wild West, but portrayed in American literature and feature film. Indian braves were often depicted as individuals with no heart intent only on taking lives and scalping their victims. The reality was much different than many of the common portrayals of this character in American literature, television, and film. Braves were respected, skilled members of the tribe responsible for hunting to provide for families and others. Braves were also leaders of the tribe and often turned to violence only when the survival of the tribe was at stake.
The design of the Indian Brave in the American Western Skulls Collection is based upon Magua, the prime villain in the book and film adaptation The Last of the Mohicans. Magua is a character with no tribe left to call his own and serves both sides in the Seven Years’ War, also known as the French-Indian War.
On the obverse of the 5 oz Colorized Proof Silver American Western Skulls Indian Brave Round is a depiction of an Indian Brave from a Mohawk tribe, whose signature shaved head with a single streak of long hair down the center became the name for that same hairstyle. This Indian Brave is fearsome and ruthless, and the crossed weapons design accompanying his image is that of scalping and hunting knives.
The reverse side of Proof Silver American Western Skulls includes the same design for all releases. Here, you’ll find the fried eagle interpretation of the heraldic eagle of the US. The national shield, arrows of war, olive branch of peace, and triangular constellation of 13 stars are all present, but this bald eagle has no feathers on its body.
