One of the most extraordinary stories in numismatics is that of the “chop marked” trade dollar, a relic of the old days of trade between East and West. Silver trade dollars first made their entry into the Chinese market in the late 18th century, and the pioneering coin was the “piece of eight” or the Spanish dollar, which became as influential in Asia as it already was in Europe and the Americas. As these dollars circulated in Asia, merchants and bankers punched characters in their surfaces to verify their silver contents. In recent years, the numismatic market has begun to recognize these “chop marks” as records of history that impart their own kind of value. Add a piece of that history to your own collection with the 8 Reales Silver Spanish Empire Bust Type Coin.

Coin Highlights:

  • Ships in a protective plastic flip-cap container!
  • Historic coinage with dates of issue across a 54-year span!
  • Limited supply, with authentic historical markings!
  • Contains 24.4 g (just under 1 Troy oz) of Silver.
  • Classic “piece of eight” design with a face value of 8 Reales.
  • Obverse field features the bust of a Spanish monarch.
  • Reverse field features the Spanish coat of arms.

The team at Silver.com ships the 8 Reales Silver Spanish Empire Bust Type Coin in a protective plastic flip-cap container, with each shipment fully insured against any mishap in transit. These coins come from a range of dates spanning over fifty years from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries.

The collectors’ market has started to wake up to the value of these kinds of coins, which for a long time were underrated because of their extensive wear and the perception that the “chop mark” was a simple flaw. More recently, collectors have begun to view the marks as historical traces that show the extraordinary length of the journey a coin has taken to come into a collection. The affordable price of these historic pieces comes together with their extensive and important backstories to make for investments with enormous future potential.

The coins feature the classic design of the globally influential Spanish dollar. The obverse field features the bust of a monarch (usually, but not always, King Charles V), and Spain’s coat of arms appears on the reverse. These coins have circulated for centuries and will show extensive wear along with their chop marks, but this visual evidence of their long history is precisely the feature that singles them out.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
