The Mercury Dime was designed by Adolph A. Weinman, one of the nation’s most celebrated coin designers. His 1916 designs of Winged Liberty and Walking Liberty replaced Barber Coinage designs on the US Dime and US Half-Dollar denominations. In fact, both designs were so popular that the United States Mint revived both in the modern era for bullion coin programs. While Walking Liberty features on the Silver American Eagle, the Mercury Dime depiction of Winged Liberty is found on the new Palladium American Eagle.

On the obverse side of the 90% Silver Mercury Dimes, you will find a depiction of Liberty in left-profile relief. This bust of Liberty captures her figure with a winged cap on her head. The design reminded people so much of the Roman messenger god Mercury that the coin, though officially the Winged Liberty Dime, became known simply as the Mercury Dime.

The reverse face of all 90% Silver Mercury Dimes includes the Roman fasces wrapped in an olive branch. The fasces was a symbol carried by lictors accompanying Roman magistrates to different provinces. Its use on coins represents war and justice, while the included olive branch depicts peace.
