President Franklin D. Roosevelt was just the third US President to feature on national coinage following more than a century of Liberty’s presence on the vast majority of US circulation denominations. Roosevelt’s bust was chosen for the US Dime shortly after his death in office during his fourth term as President of the United States. The dime was the denomination of choice because he was responsible for generating broad American support for the March of Dimes to fight polio. Following his death, the US Dime was a natural choice to honor the deceased leader.

Though the Roosevelt Dime design is still in use to this day, only those coins issued between 1946 and 1964 have 90% silver content and 10% copper. On the obverse face of 90% Silver Roosevelt Dimes, you will find the left-profile bust of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The addition of Roosevelt to the US Dime marked the end of Liberty’s use on this denomination.
The reverse side of 90% Silver Roosevelt Dimes includes a depiction of a large torch in the center flanked by an olive branch on one side and an oak branch on the other. Sinnock’s original design concept for the reverse of the Roosevelt Dime included a hand grasping the torch and branches together, but it was eventually decided to use the design without the hand to space out the three elements.
