The United States has gone through various forms of paper money since the time of the Civil War. This was about the time that paper money production really started to take off, and the result was a hodgepodge of options produced across the country. Silver Certificates were first produced and distributed in 1878, with the final designs released in 1957, production halting 1964, and acceptance of the notes ending in 1968.

Silver Certificates were issued as a result of the Fourth Coinage Act, a move that effectively ended silver coining in the US and put the nation on the gold standard. Silver Certificates had a value assigned that could be backed by physical silver, with the certificates redeemable for silver dollar coins. The final year of acceptance in 1967-1968 only allowed for redemption of the notes for raw silver bullion.
